Sakaiminato, Japan bills itself as 'the city of fish and Kitaro' – and one can clearly see why after getting to know the city. It’s also the home of Shigeru Mizuki, creator of the famous Manga comic series GeGeGe no Kitaro.Find Cruises Sailing to This Port
Kitaro Road is a whimsical tribute to the characters of the much-loved Kitaro series. More than 130 bronze statues memorialise Mizuki's imaginative take on the Japanese folkloric tradition of yokai, or spirit-monsters. A museum further invites exploration on this modern adaptation of Japanese folklore.
Crab is king in Sakaiminato. Restaurants serve matsuba gani (male snow crab) that are locally eaten with sanbaizu sauce, a mixture of soya sauce, vinegar and sugar. Oba gani is another local favourite: female snow crab served with an egg in miso soup.
Kitaro-related souvenirs are the biggest draw in Sakaiminato. Find several of the spirit-monster characters on t-shirts, mugs and more at the Shigeru Mizuki museum or the Oki Tourism Souvenir centre.
