Sakaiminato, Japan bills itself as 'the city of fish and Kitaro' – and one can clearly see why after getting to know the city. Sakaiminato is renowned for its excellent seafood, giving local sushi chefs plenty of fresh catches with which to create culinary masterpieces. Kitaro Road is a whimsical tribute to the characters of the much-loved Kitaro series. More than 130 bronze statues memorialise Mizuki's imaginative take on the Japanese folkloric tradition of yokai, or spirit-monsters. A museum further invites exploration on this modern adaptation of Japanese folklore.

  • At Sakai Dabai Park, you can walk through pathways lined with 350 cherry blossom trees, and enjoy a seaside picnic underneath the tree canopies.
  • The Sakaiminato Lighthouse is the oldest wooden lighthouse in the region, and offers a lovely view of Sakai Dabai Park.
  • The Sea Life Museum collection features stuffed fish and sea mammals, and a history of Sakaiminato's cultural connection to the sea.

Get a Taste of Local Flavour

Crab is king in Sakaiminato. Restaurants serve matsuba gani (male snow crab) that are locally eaten with sanbaizu sauce, a mixture of soya sauce, vinegar and sugar. Oba gani is another local favourite: female snow crab served with an egg in miso soup.

Shopping For Bargains

Kitaro-related souvenirs are the biggest draw in Sakaiminato. Find several of the spirit-monster characters on t-shirts, mugs and more at the Shigeru Mizuki museum or the Oki Tourism Souvenir centre.
