A trip to Kumamoto isn’t complete without a tour of the Kumamoto Castle, one of the most impressive castles in Japan. It’s the main attraction of Kumamoto City, with virtually impenetrable walls and a luxurious and traditional interior. Built during 1601 to 1607 by Kato Kiyomasa following the decisive Battle of Sekigahara, the fortress today houses a museum which contains palanquins, samurai armour, Japanese swords and many other artefacts from the Kato and Hosokawa clans.

  • Walk through the cinematic beauty of the Suizenji Jojuen Garden, with slopes and Japanese cherry blossoms that will take your breath away.
  • Visit Honmyo-ji Temple, built in honour of Kato Kiyomasa, the builder of Kumamoto Castle. It sits halfway up a hill and offers an exquisite view of the castle towering over the city.
